US Route 50 Stormwater Construction Inspections

The US 50 at MD589 Geometric and Safety Improvements Project included construction of a second left turn lane from US 50 eastbound to MD 589 (south of Ocean Pines). Project goals were to manage stormwater, ease congestion, improve intersection efficiency, and improve safety by reducing the incidence of left-turning vehicles stacked into the main US 50 travel lanes. The improvements serve residents, travelers, and visitors to Ocean Downs Casino. 

RAUCH, inc. provided field inspection, construction inspection, and as-built report services. Our scope of work included assuring that approved geotextile materials were installed in the swales, that the check dam was installed to the proper design width and height, and that the contractor excavated WS 4-2 up to the point of the existing AG crossing. Our team evaluated components of the project in accordance with the MDOT Design-Build Manual, the Highway Drainage Manual, the SHA Construction Manual, and other related standards. Stormwater management facilities were designed using Environmental Site Design (ESD) to the Maximum Extent Practicable (MEP).

RAUCH inc. also provided survey stakeout, field inspection, and construction inspection services for improvements to eastbound US 50 (Ocean Gateway) from MD 611 (Stephen Decatur Highway) to the bridge over Sinepuxent Bay (Harry W. Kelley Memorial Bridge). Our scope of work included confirming grading and elevations and certifying that the stormwater management facilities were constructed in accordance with plans approved by the State Highway Administration’s Plan Review Division. Stormwater features included grass swales and Jellyfish filters. This project was complex and unique given that it included a combination of concrete, asphalt, and boardwalk. Improvements included construction of a 10-foot wide, ADA-compliant bicycle-pedestrian path, new crosswalks throughout the corridor, new audible/countdown pedestrian signals, and lighting.
